A competition also led Thomas Merkel into the field of architecture: fountain houses on the grounds of the Institute for Water, Soil and Air Hygiene in Berlin. Until today, however, this remained his only contact with the exciting subject of architecture.
During his studies, Thomas Merkel won an architecture competition, the task of which was to design a fountain house for the Institute for Water, Soil and Air Hygiene in Berlin Marienfelde.
Fountain houses are smaller buildings designed to protect water pumps from the weather. Necessarily, these must be able to be lifted with cranes in order to easily reach the well installations.
Thomas Merkel makes sure that the materials used can age gracefully. Surfaces often become more attractive over time, as with these fountain houses.
Three fountain houses were built on the grounds of the WABOLU Institute in Berlin in 1997.
